Linux Vendors
There are three popular Linux vendors;
- Redhat, the company that made the concept of open source software as a subscription a reality with RedHat Enterprise Linux.
- Novell Inc., the owners of SUSE Linux - probably the major commercial competitor to RedHat in terms of commercial Linux.
- Ubuntu, becoming quite a popular distribution of GNU/Linux, sponsored by Canonical Ltd. who also provide contract support.
But remember there are numerous Linux distributions. If you want a fuller list have a look at Linux Links - The Linux Portal
Other Vendors
These other vendors have something to offer commercial organisations, whether it be hardware, middleware, another operating system to keep management happy. Plus, if folks search for these company names, hopefully we'll come up on the list!
- Microsoft Inc., I'm sure management like them. They have done some useful things over the last quarter of a century. Anyway, with their Novell - Microsoft licensing deal it might make it easier for you to get Linux into your organisation.
- Sun Microsystems Inc., as an alternative to Linux, Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris is pretty good.
Training Providers
Here are some alternate training providers, of both Linux and Java courses;
- Redhat the provider of the official Redhat training for all things Redhat; Linux, JBoss, Redhat directory server, etc.
- Sun Microsystems Inc. for all things Sun related; Solaris, Java, Sun hardware.
